“Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.“
Welcome back to The Workbox I am incredibly glad you made it back. If you are here for the first time, I hope you find what you are looking for and are satisfied by what you read! I would recommend checking out my previous post about Gratitude. You can find it by following through this link here!
Today, I wanted to write about a method of memorizing verses that my wife showed me just last week. It has been a real game changer for me and it has also enabled me to memorize much longer verses faster. These benefits have encouraged me to memorize more verses in the Bible, which I definitely need to do more of.
The method that she showed me is the process of only writing the first letter of each word in the verse. For example, let us take Romans 5.8 and use it for our breakdown. By the end of this, you will be equipped to memorize any verse!
"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Wow. What a verse! God shows - continually- his love for us in that while we were dead in our trespasses and sins, Christ died on the cross for us. He willingly gave up his life and laid it down so that we may live in him. But I digress, back to the memorization. The first step - and there are only two - is to write out the first letter of every word all in a line. Our verse would look like this, bGshlfuitwwwssCdfu. That's it, that is all you have to do when you write down the verse. Our minds somehow see those first letters and it fills in the rest. I find that I know more Scripture than I realized when I used this method.
The second and most important step is to practice memorizing the verse. My wife and I write out our letters on our forearms and practice memorizing them throughout the day. We also challenge each other with pop quizzes and ask what the other's verse is. I personally, write out the string of letters several times in my notebook as practice. As recap our verse in Romans 5.8 and the letters are, bGshlfuitwwwssCdfu.
That is all for this post, it is a short and easy method to memorize Scripture. Not only are we working it into our minds through memorization, but if you write it down on your forearm then you have it near at hand. I am a firm believer in writing things down as a way of remembering and learning, but that is one of many ways of learning. When it comes to memorization of Scripture, writing it out and speaking it out are some of the two best ways. Get a buddy and challenge each other to memorize a verse today!
"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
What are some verses that you memorized? What are methods that you use to accomplish that? Leave a comment and let’s have a conversation!
Love this method, haven’t used it in a while so thanks for the encouragement and reminder.
This is great! I have used this method to create complex passwords for the many many accounts we must maintain in a digital world, and also helps me learn a verse!
